The Relaxation Response is a built-in response of our nervous system (in particular, our parasympathetic nervous system). Also called the “rest and digest system” it acts to bring healing from stress and a return to homeostasis. This is in contrast with the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for our “fight or flight” stress response.
This group of relaxation response treatments are done while our body is relatively immobile or still and the stimulus agent is internal. These include practices like meditation or deep breathing.
